Influence of Dipolar Fields on the Photochemical Reactivity of Thin Titania Films on BaTiO3 Substrates

چکیده
The photochemical properties of TiO2 films supported on BaTiO3 were investigated to test the hypothesis that dipolar fields from a ferroelectric substrate would affect the reactivity of the supported film. Photochemical reaction products were formed on the TiO2 surface in patterns that correspond to the underlying domain structure of BaTiO3. As the film thickness increases from 10 to 100 nm, the titania more effectively screens the ferroelectric field, and the pattern of reaction products is obscured. It is concluded that dipolar fields from the ferroelectric substrate influence charge carrier transport in the film and spatially localize the reaction products.

Photochemical Reactivity of Titania Films on BaTiO3 Substrates: Influence of Titania Phase and Orientation
Titania films were grown on BaTiO3 (BTO) substrates by pulsed laser deposition to create (001)Anatase||(100)BTO, (100)Rutile||(111)BTO, and (110)Rutile||(110)BTO heterostructures. The photochemical reactivity was evaluated by observing the amount of silver reduced by each film under identical conditions. The thickest films (100 nm) had reactivities that varied with the phase of titania and the ...
متن کاملPhotochemical Reactivity of Titania Films on BaTiO3 Substrates: Origin of Spatial Selectivity
Titania films, 15-100 nm thick, have been grown on BaTiO3 substrates and used to photochemically reduce Agþ to Ag and oxidize Pb2þ to Pb4þ under ultraviolet illumination. Atomic force microscopy was used to show that the reactions are spatially selective and that the pattern of products on the film surface reproduces the pattern of products on the bare substrate. The influence of the substrate ...
متن کاملThe Influence of the Dipolar Field Effect on the Photochemical Reactivity of Sr2Nb2O7 and BaTiO3 Microcrystals
It has previously been shown that the dipolar field effect spatially localizes photochemical reaction products on the surfaces of macroscopic ferroelectric crystals. In this work, photochemical reactions that deposit insoluble products on the surface have been used to study the dipolar field effect in microcrystals of BaTiO3 and Sr2Nb2O7. In both cases, the patterns of reduced silver on the sur...
